About Us
The Brian Sorensen Cup was founded in 2009 to honour the memory of local legend Brian Sorensen after his passing. His wife, Jenni Sorensen, initiated the event as a way to continue his legacy by giving back to the community he loved. For five years, the event successfully raised funds for local causes, but Jenni wanted to expand its reach and make a greater impact. Seeking to formalize the charity work and ensure broader support for community groups, she partnered with Rhys Bawden and Bill Conway, directors of Salsa Bar & Grill. Together, they established the Salsa Sorensen Association Incorporated, with the goal of creating a sustainable charity focused on distributing funds to those in need throughout the Douglas Shire.
In 2014, the Salsa Sorensen Association Inc. was officially incorporated as a Queensland Association, and today it operates under the leadership of a board of local directors. The association’s core objectives include:
- Raising funds to support not-for-profit organizations, sporting clubs, and charitable groups, as well as any other groups deemed eligible by the management committee within the Douglas Shire.
- Organizing and conducting at least one major fundraising event each year to ensure continued support for local initiatives.
This dedicated effort has allowed the association to become a vital source of financial assistance, strengthening the community by providing funds where they are most needed.
Jenni Sorensen – President
Jenni Sorensen began her journey with the creation of the Brian Sorensen Cup in 2009, established in honour of her late husband, Brian Sorensen. What started as a tribute has grown into the Salsa Sorensen Association Inc, a not-for-profit organisation that has become a cornerstone of community fundraising in the Douglas Shire.
Now in its 18th year, the Association continues to thrive under Jenni’s leadership. Her passion for helping others, combined with her drive to bring people together, has seen the Association raise significant funds for local clubs, groups, and causes. Jenni’s vision is simple but powerful — to build on Brian’s legacy by ensuring the community is supported, connected, and celebrated for years to come.

Rhys Bawden – Committee Member
Co-owner of Salsa Bar & Grill, Rhys is the golfing heartbeat of the committee and makes sure our tournaments always swing in the right direction.
Jess Uhlig – Secretary
Owner of Green Food Australia, Jess is the engine room of the Association, steering events, marketing, and operations with energy and creativity (and leaving the golf swings to others).
Skye Thomson – Treasurer
From Port Douglas Financial Planners, Skye keeps the books balanced and the committee on track. A founding member, she’s been with us from day one.
Nadine Jones – Committee Member
Owner of Pink Real Estate and winner of the women’s team in 2025, Nadine is just as sharp at fundraising as she is on the course.
Jenny Montgomery – Committee Member
An original “Chardy Sister” and OG founding member, Jenny has been part of the fun, friendship, and fundraising since the very beginning.
Bill Conway – Committee Member
Co-owner of Salsa Bar & Grill and a “social golfer,” Bill brings as much energy to the course as he does to the kitchen and bar.
Together, this crew keeps the Salsa Sorensen Association swinging – from fairways to fine wine – with community spirit, great golf, and even better lunches.
